Celebrate National 4-H Week with Custer County 4-H

MEDIA ADVISORY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Colleen Peterson, 4-H Aide
UNL Extension Custer County
September 28, 2007

The University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension - Custer County Office invites you to join the 500 4-H youth in Custer County in celebrating National 4-H Week, October 7-13, 2007.

During National 4-H Week, Custer County 4-H'ers will be taking part in a 4-H Window Display Contest throughout the county, October 7-13. 4-H clubs will be decorating business windows in their communities with the theme "4-H Science, Engineering, and Technology (4-H SET) Programs.”

4-H'ers who have taken part in the 4-H Pumpkin Contest this summer will also have their Grand Finale during the Farmers Market in Broken Bow on October 4. The goal of the 4-H Pumpkin Contest was to promote the 4-H program, as well as the 4-H horticulture projects.

4-H is Nebraska's only youth development program directly connected to the technological advances and latest research of the University of Nebraska Lincoln. 4-H members learn leadership, citizenship, and life skills through hands-on projects in science, engineering and technology, healthy living, or citizenship. Topics are as varied as rocketry, GPS mapping, public speaking, photography, nutrition, physical fitness, money management, and community service.

4-H helps our community's young people reach their full potential. Recent studies show youth who participate in 4-H do better in school, are more motivated to help others, feel safe to try new things, achieve a sense of self-esteem, and develop lasting friendships.

For more information concerning the Custer County 4-H program, contact Colleen Peterson, 4-H Aide, at the UNL Extension - Custer County Office, 872-6831.

4-H is one of the largest youth development organizations in America with more than 6.5 million young people ages 5-19, 538,000 volunteers, 3,500 staff and 60 million alumni. Learn more about the Nebraska 4-H adventure at www.4h.unl.edu.
